God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Isrealites: ‘I AM has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:14)
I read Exodus 3 a lot because it reminds me who I am. For some reason I picture myself as Moses, standing terrified in front of the indescribable flare of God’s love. He has a plan, a good plan to rescue his people. I like this plan, it sounds very heroic of him to release the captives of this world. But then he tells me to go. And suddenly his plan doesn’t seem so brilliant.
“Who am I that I should go to them?” I whine. And then comes the long list of excuses explaining why God has made a mistake. He then replies simply, “I will be with you. I have not made a mistake because I am who I am, infinite, holy, just, kind, and true. I do not lie. I do not leave. I do not make mistakes.” Every time I try and convince God that I am unworthy, inadequate, and unsuitable, he responds, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (1 Corinthians 12:9)
God has told me to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison, and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. (Isaiah 42:7) I feel his burning purpose for me, for all of us, to look deeply into the eyes of the oppressed and to remind them who they are. We are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works. (Ephesians 2:10)
This is my good work, the World Race. God hasn’t called me because he thought I could do it, God called me because he knows he can do anything. I stand before this burning bush uncertain in my own strength but knowing power comes from God if I ask for it.
